The Azurri Team Profile

Post Ranking: 2
Region: Europe
World Cup History: 16th appearance, champion in 1934, 1938 and 1982; runner-up in 1970 and 1994
Top Player: MF-F Francesco Totti
Lowdown: The Azzurri is rounding into form under former Juventus coach Marcello Lippi, fielding a typically disciplined defensive side and an increasingly dangerous attack sparked by Totti. He likely will feed forwards such as Alberto Gilardino and Luca Toni, who carried Italy to a relatively easy qualification and seem ready to supplant Fs Christian Vieri and Alessandro del Piero.

Best of goals made on the World Cup 2006

With the support of Green Goal, the first ever environmental project developed for a FIFA World Cup, crucial measures have been undertaken in the construction and reconstruction of FIFA World Cup stadia to ensure the sustainable reduction of consumption. Much progress has already been made in environmental protection as a result of the project conducted jointly by the 2006 FIFA World Cup Organising Committee, the Federal Environment Ministry and the German Federal Environment Foundation.

However, with the tournament looming ever closer, the project is entering a decisive period with central tasks to be fulfilled.

Ambitious objectives have been set, such as increasing local public transport to and from 2006 FIFA World Cup games as a proportion of total traffic volumes, reducing unavoidable waste, and energy and water consumption.
